Quick Auto/Car Insurance Lesson

There is a lot to know about auto insurance in order to fully understand what you're paying for. The following information provides a quick education to help you navigate the twists, turns and choices involved in buying auto insurance.

Auto insurance includes three broad coverage categories designed to protect you from financial loss if you have an accident:

  • Property coverage pays for damage to or theft of your car.
  • Liability coverage pays for your legal responsibility to others for bodily injury or property damage.
  • Medical coverage pays for the cost of treating injuries, rehabilitation and sometimes lost wages and funeral expenses.

Within the three broad coverage categories listed above, an auto insurance policy is comprised of six different kinds of coverage. Most states require you to buy some, but not all, of these coverages. If you're financing a car, your lender may also have requirements.

  • Liability
  • Medical payments
  • Uninsured motorist/Underinsured motorist
  • Damage to your auto
  • Personal injury protection (No Fault)
  • Additional, optional coverages

Georgia Auto Insurance Laws

Georgia is considered a tort state, which means that drivers are financially responsible for the property damage and personal injury they may cause during an auto accident. Liability coverage helps insure you against these costs, and it is required in Georgia.

Georgia car insurance laws require liability coverage of 25/50/25. (That's $25,000 per person for injuries you cause to the other party, up to $50,000 for all, and $25,000 for damage you cause to the other party's property.)

However, these are only minimums, and higher levels of protection are strongly recommended, especially if you have assets to protect. After all, accidents can get very expensive, especially if injury is involved.

Georgia auto insurance companies will also offer optional coverages such as medical payments, collision, comprehensive, and uninsured and underinsured motorists coverage.

You may want to consider purchasing any or all of these coverages, especially uninsured and underinsured motorist coverages. These policies help cover the cost of your injuries and property damage should you be in an accident with a driver with inadequate liability insurance.

Remember that in order for your car insurance coverage to take effect, all drivers and cars must be specifically listed on your policy. You should also refer to your auto contract for the specific terms and conditions of the coverage that you have purchased.

Your Safety Net

It is a financial safety net that can help you offset the cost of:

  • Bodily injuries to yourself or others.
  • Lost wages due to injury.
  • Benefits to survivors when an accident results in death.
  • Lawsuits brought against you as the result of an accident.
  • Repairs made to your auto due to damage caused in an accident.
